Blue Doors Annual Fund

Every Gift Counts!

Canisius High School students receive an academically challenging and spiritually enriched education of the highest caliber. The Blue Doors Annual Fund provides the critical revenue needed to offer any qualified student, regardless of his financial situation, the benefits of a Jesuit high school education. When you make a gift, you join a growing number of alumni, parents, and friends who affirm their belief in the mission of Canisius and value a Jesuit education.

Along with financial aid, The annual fund also supports athletics, campus ministry, the Christian service program, the Emmaus and Kairos retreats, dynamic information technology, and immersion programs. Every gift, regardless of size, makes a significant difference in the lives of our young men.

Why Give to the Annual Fund?

blue doors
  • To help underwrite the nearly $2,300 difference between the cost of educating each student and the tuition charged. In addition, the annual fund also provides for critical budget needs throughout the school.
  • The annual fund allows Canisius the ability to provide equitable compensation for faculty and staff, increase financial assistance to deserving students, expand our athletic and performing arts programs, and to help maintain our facilities and grounds.
  • Every gift counts. You can take pride in knowing that you are participating in upholding Canisius' high standards of excellence.
  • Alumni gifts help each Canisius alumnus increase alumni giving participation for his class.
  • Continued support of the annual fund will help ensure immediate needs are always met.

1180 President's Society

The 1180 President’s Society, inspired by the Delaware Avenue address of Canisius High School, is composed of a generous group of Canisius alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff members who support the Annual Fund.

Members at this leadership level have each made gifts of $1,180 or greater to the Annual Fund or to endowed scholarships during the course of the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30)

We are grateful to the donors of the 1180 President's Society for supporting our Jesuit mission. Our members' leadership gifts provide many transformative opportunities to our students as they become “Men for and with Others.”

Benefits of membership in the 1180 President's Society include:

  • Invitation to the annual President’s Reception Dinner
  • Recognition in our annual report as an 1180 President's Society member

Questions regarding the 1180 President's Society or the Annual Fund should be directed to Andrew Deyell '91, vice president for institutional advancement, at (716) 200-0265 or deyell@canisiushigh.org.

Restricted Gifts

What is the benefit of giving a restricted gift? A restricted gift allows you to determine how your donation should be spent. This method of giving allows you to play a role in the distribution of support through certain restrictions on what is supported. There are two categories of restricted gifts at Canisius High School. They are endowed restricted and non-endowed restricted gifts.

Endowed Restricted Gifts

Endowed restricted gifts allow for a gift to be made annually in perpetuity. As set by the Canisius Board of Trustees, an endowed fund will provide a gift of 5% interest (20 quarter cycle average) annually in perpetuity for the purpose established by the donor. The minimum gift level of an endowed gift is $50,000. Typical endowed gifts include:

  • Academic Programs
  • Co-curricular Programs
  • Experiential Learning
  • Faculty Chairs
  • Scholarships

Non-endowed Restricted Gifts

A non-endowed restricted gift allows a donor to provide a gift for a specific purpose in any amount. The difference between an endowed and a non-endowed gift is that a non-endowed gift is not given in perpetuity. The principle amount of a non-endowed gift is spent down until there is no principal left.

An example of this would be our Hardy Mendez Fund

Planned Giving

The St. Peter Canisius Society is a community of generous and strategic-thinking donors who support the school’s mission well into the future through bequests, charitable trusts, and gifts of real estate, securities, or insurance.

The Society honors our school’s namesake. St. Peter Canisius was an influential teacher and preacher. He supervised the founding and operation of some of the first Jesuit educational institutions, often with little resources.

It is the firm belief of Canisius High School that every young man should be able to access a high-quality, Jesuit education regardless of his financial circumstance. We ask you to consider joining the St. Peter Canisius Society to help us expand opportunities for an excellent Jesuit education to the next generation of deserving students.

Have you already planned a gift to Canisius?

Please let us know so that we can confirm your membership in the St. Peter Canisius Society and update our records.

Contact Andrew Deyell '91, vice president for institutional advancement, at (716) 200-0265 or deyell@canisiushigh.org.

Stock Donations

Gifting stock is a great way to support Canisius High School.

It can also be an effective tax saving strategy for you and your family.

Canisius maintains a brokerage account at a local Merrill Lynch office where stocks can be deposited. Typically, stocks will be liquidated immediately and on settlement the proceeds will be sent to the school. However, we are able to accommodate unique circumstances at the donor’s request where the donated securities are liquidated over a certain period of time and/or at a certain price so as to minimize any possible negative reaction to the market for that security. We also have access to the Merrill Lynch institutional trading desk for very large concentrated positions.

There are different ways to donate stock to Canisius. We have made it easy and stress-free to complete your donation.

Wire Transfer

This is the most common and simple method used by donors in gifting stock to the school. Contact your financial advisor and instruct him/her to transfer shares of stock you currently hold in your account to the account of Canisius High School.

Stock Certificates

Less common, but easily completed, would be if you are in possession of stock certificates, or if you hold shares at the company’s investment program aka DRIP plans.

Please contact one of the following to assist you in that transfer:

Entity Name: Canisius High School
DTC Title: Merrill Lynch
Advisor: Timothy L. Kane ’80
Office: (716) 635-4360
Email: timothy_kane@ml.com

We will keep you apprised of receipt of the stock and all steps in the process. You will receive a letter from Canisius acknowledging your gift. Should you have any questions, please contact Andrew Deyell '91, vice president for institutional advancement at (716) 200-0265 or deyell@canisiushigh.org.
