Hector Gitego
As the third and youngest boy in my family, I knew I was destined to be a Crusader. I had witnessed the tremendous impact that Canisius had on my two older brothers and I aspired to have a similar experience.
Like most underclassmen, I didn’t know what Canisius had in store for me. However, choosing Canisius High School would be the best decision I’ve ever made. My four years here have shaped me into the man I’ve dreamt to be – thanks to a community that welcomed me with open arms.
It showed me the importance of being a leader not just in the classroom, but in the community and my everyday life. Canisius has taught me the importance of fortitude through grief and suffering, along with conquering adversity. Canisius gave me opportunities to practice my faith through prayer, reflection, and through various retreats. Some high schools in the region have incorporated these as well, but when it comes to having a strong reputation Canisius High School stands alone. Canisius High School helped me discover my identity through service. The service at Canisius is truly like no other. As a student at Canisius High School we are called to serve others and be leaders moving forward.
Looking back at my four years, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of God, myself and the brotherhood that Canisius has to offer. The brotherhood lives in all of us through going on multiple retreats, attending a sporting event, being a part of teams like cross country and track and field, having the honor of reading the morning announcements, or simply by greeting the guards at the entrance to the Blue Doors. The brotherhood will continue to live on as we disperse into the next chapters of our lives.
There are so many ways to describe 1180 Delaware. However, one word that embodies this community is “opportunity.” Through education, athletics, fine arts and many more aspects of Canisius, there are certainly opportunities that are capable of changing lives.
I want to express my deepest gratitude for being nominated. I would also like to congratulate the other nominees: Jack Lincoln, Patrick Enright, Dylan McCarthy, Jack Ganci and Daniel Sugg. It is an honor and a privilege to stand beside you.
Thank you,
Hector Gitego
