Canisius High School rowers had strong performances at the Fontana All High Regatta in Buffalo on Memorial Day.
The day started with a Crusaders win in the Varsity 2- by Dylan Sass '21 (stroke) and Matt Talty '21 (bow). This lineup qualified for the Youth National Championship Regatta in Sarasota, FL next week. They will compete there against the top high school and club rowing programs in the country.
The Canisius Freshman 4+ go down as undefeated for the 2020-2021 season. The crew won their final race of the year in the Boys Freshman/Novice 4+ event. Canisius placed first and second, after placing first in both of their respective semifinals. The Freshman 4+ composed of Max Burget '24 (stroke), Sam Ferguson '24, James Dodman '24, Peter Cross '24 (bow) and Teddy Hibbard '24 (coxswain) placed first. Ryan Brown '23 (stroke), Jack Freeman '23, Rory Kavanaugh '22, Brendan Johnson '23, and Santino DeLauro '24 (coxswain) placed second.
The Canisius Freshman/Novice 8 also won their event, defeating St. Joe's in a spectacular race by .4 seconds with Burget (stroke), Ferguson, Dodman, Cross, Brown, Mark Kadiev '24, Lorn Anderson '24, Rowan McNeil '24 (bow) and Hibbard (coxswain).
Nate Siwiec '21 and Henry Neil '22 followed up this success by winning the Varsity 2x.
Canisius Varsity Lightweight 4+, Varsity Lightweight 8+, and Junior 8+ entries were uncontested.
Canisius’ second Varsity 4+ placed second in the Lightweight/Second Varsity 4+ to St. Joe's. A local newspaper report misidentified this Canisius crew as the Varsity Lightweight 4+ which had just won the SRAA National Championship Regatta.
St. Joe's was victorious in the Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+, rowing well with their heavyweight crews through a stiff head wind.
The Canisius rowing program now prepares for the Youth National Championship Regatta in Sarasota, FL where it will be racing in both the U17 4+ and Varsity 2- events. This regatta includes entries from both the fastest rowing clubs and high school scholastic programs. Canisius is the reigning champions in the Varsity Lightweight 4+ event at this regatta.
