Nicholas Marchese ‘22 recently graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point – and, subsequently took his oath as a second lieutenant in the U.S Army.

Parents Joe and Joelle Marchese of West Seneca took part in the tradition of pinning the new gold bar rank insignia onto the shoulders of the graduate’s uniform.

Nicholas will be stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as a Logistics Officer. Schofield Barracks is located at the foot of the Waianae mountain range on the island of Oahu.

 

 


The American flag in the background of both pictures is the one the Marchese family had fly above 1180 Delaware Ave. two years ago.

The flag was flown at CHS in 2024 at the request of the Marchese family as Nicholas was entering his final two years at West Point, just after he and the USMA’s entire Class of 2026 took the Oath of Affirmation.

Upon completion of the Oath of Affirmation, many parents have a flag flown at a notable location near their hometown, including state capitols or government offices.

The Marchese’s requested that the flag be flown over Canisius, where four of their sons have graduated (Matthew ’24, Nick ’22, Ben ’20, Mike ’18).

“We know that his education at Canisius and the support he received from the faculty at CHS helped him get to where he is today,” Joe and Joelle Marchese wrote to Canisius in making the flag request. “He thrived and loved his four years at Canisius.

“Watching our four boys grow and thrive at Canisius has been amazing. It really is a special place.”

During our 156th Commencement Exercises, an early portion of the ceremony was dedicated to special graduation honors, including an award that showed yet again the quality and quantity of outstanding educators at CHS.

The Bene Merenti Award is presented to members of the faculty at Jesuit schools in recognition of 20 years of teaching, serving and leading.

Those are the words of John Ricotta '05 upon being named the Director of Athletics at Canisius High School. 

Ricotta, a longtime member of the championship CHS Basketball coaching staff, comes to 1180 Delaware Ave. following a 15-year career in professional sports in Buffalo.

We mourn the loss of Kibler, a standout swimmer at CHS who went on to swim collegiately and graduated last year from Xavier University. He passed away July 15 following a battle with cancer. He was 23.

We mourn the loss of Mayer, who was entering his junior year at the University of Dayton in Ohio. He passed suddenly and tragically in a car accident Monday morning. He was 20.
