Football Accolades 2019

The Canisius High School football team finished atop The Buffalo News final football poll of the season for the fifth time in eight years. The Crusaders also earned the number three spot in the final statewide poll.

Canisius linebacker CJ Ozolins '20 also collected more accolades. He has been named the All-Western New York Player of the Year by The Buffalo News. Additionally, offensive lineman Donovan Cornelius '20 was named to the newspaper's All-WNY offensive first team while fellow lineman Jake Troup '20 was named to the second team. On defense, Ozolins and defensive back Joe Dixon '21 were named to the first team while Riley Simpson '21 was named to the third team. Honorable mentions include quarterback Tyler Baker '22, wide receiver Nik McMillan '22, offensive lineman Drevon Shaw '21, defensive lineman Malachi Charleston '21, and linebacker Nigel Dabney '20.

Many Crusaders also appeared in the All-Catholic large school team. Ozolins is the Defensive Co-Player of the Year while Simpson and Charleston were named first team defense. Adding to the list of all-stars, Baker, Dixon, Cornelius, McMillan, and Shaw were each named first team offense.

Finalists announced for 2025 Mr. Canisius award

This year's six finalists have been announced for the Mr. Canisius Award, which is presented annually to the graduating senior who, in the estimation of his peers, epitomizes all that Canisius stands for.

Teacher Craig Hinchcliffe reflects on CHS trip to Italy and a historic Easter Sunday

“It was a pretty moving experience. … It was pretty surreal.”

Craig Hinchcliffe and several students spoke Wednesday about the CHS educational trip to Italy over Easter Break, which culminated in the group being part of a historical moment: Pope Francis’ final public appearance as he said “Buona Pasqua” – Happy Easter – and blessed those gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.

“He was a Jesuit who knew and loved Jesus deeply,” said CHS President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J. “Francis was a faithful servant of the Gospel who remained close to the people whom Jesus would be close to in our own time. He consistently called us all to greater mercy and compassion.”
