The fall sports season has been delayed for Canisius High School, and all Monsignor Martin Athletic Association (MMAA) schools, until at least September 21, 2020.
The New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association (NYSCHSAA), of which the MMAA is a member, met on July 20 and decided to postpone the start of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic and concern for the safety of student-athletes. The NYSCHSAA is also prepared to hold three condensed athletic seasons during the 2020-2021 school year when conditions permit, if the fall season should need to be further postponed. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has delayed its fall sports season until at least September 21 as well.
"Our student-athletes continue to work hard and prepare for the day when they'll be able to compete again," says Canisius High School Director of Athletics Jim Mauro. "While we'd all like that to be as soon as possible, we understand that the decisions to delay are based on guidance from public health experts, and these decisions are for the greater good of our community."
As for when try-outs and practices will begin, Canisius student-athletes can currently sign up for fall sports using the online registration platform. Try-out dates and practice schedules will be determined once Canisius receives clearance from the state to host these activities.
