Prior to tonight’s Edmonton Oilers at Buffalo Sabres game, Oilers general manager Stan Bowman ’91 visited his alma mater and spent time with some of our students in the Madden Center for Global Learning.

Bowman, also the executive vice president for hockey operations for the Oilers, is in his first year with Edmonton after serving as general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks for parts of 13 seasons, during which he won three Stanley Cups.

He spoke Monday morning to the Introduction to Sports Management class taught by Bryce Hopkins ’08, one of several dual-enrollment college courses CHS offers in partnership with Canisius University.

Bowman shared with students how he grew up in Buffalo, attended the University of Notre Dame and started his career in consulting before becoming an NHL executive on the business side of teams’ operations and then moving up on the hockey side.

He took questions from students about sports management in general and even about how he and Edmonton approached the trade deadline.

Teacher Craig Hinchcliffe reflects on CHS trip to Italy and a historic Easter Sunday

“It was a pretty moving experience. … It was pretty surreal.”

Craig Hinchcliffe and several students spoke Wednesday about the CHS educational trip to Italy over Easter Break, which culminated in the group being part of a historical moment: Pope Francis’ final public appearance as he said “Buona Pasqua” – Happy Easter – and blessed those gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.

Requiescat in Pace, Pope Francis

“He was a Jesuit who knew and loved Jesus deeply,” said CHS President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J. “Francis was a faithful servant of the Gospel who remained close to the people whom Jesus would be close to in our own time. He consistently called us all to greater mercy and compassion.”
