Crusaders Roundup 12/29/19

Basketball

The Crusaders started a busy week with an 89-76 victory over McQuaid. The squad pulled off a phenomenal comeback as they trailed by double digits in the first quarter. Dewayne Vass ‘20 led the offense with 28 points while Joe Ciocca ‘21, Max Dowling ‘21, and Shane Cercone ‘23 contributed 21, 12, and 11 points, respectively.

After the holiday, Canisius traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the St. Pius X Christmas Classic Tournament. In the quarterfinals, the team jumped to a 23-point halftime lead against Charlotte Catholic and won 74-40. Dowling, Eric Kegler ‘20, and Eric Geisler ‘21 scored thirteen, twelve, and eleven points, respectively. In the semifinals the following day, the Crusaders defeated Cardinal Gibbons 66-50. Vass contributed 28 points while Dowling added thirteen.

With that win, the 7-0 Canisius team will face off against tournament host St. Pius X in the finals on Monday. Later in the week in Buffalo, the team will also matchup against Cathedral Prep and St. Mary’s.

Fed Hockey

Canisius started their week with a 1-0 win over defending league champion St. Mary’s. Spencer DiLeo ‘21 had the only goal in the contest.

Later in the week, the Crusaders traveled to the CBA Tournament in Albany. In the semifinals, they shut out North Rockland 6-0. Then, the squad defeated CBA 2-1 for the championship! Dan Tocco ‘20 scored in the first period for the early lead then Nick Trapasso ‘20 scored the go-ahead goal in the second. Goaltender Luke Kerwin ‘20 iced the game in the third period, not allowing a goal.

Canisius is now 7-1 as they face St. Mary’s and Timon this coming weekend. Go Crusaders!

Celebrating 150 Years

The 2019-2020 school year includes celebrations of 150 years of Jesuit education at Canisius.

Serving as Pall Bearers

Through Canisius' St. Joseph of Arimathea Society, students serve as pallbearers at the funerals of those in need.

Coffee House 2020

Canisius students will perform in a coffee house setting to raise money for the service immersion program.

Football Accolades 2019

Canisius finishes atop the poll, and CJ Ozolins '20 is the All-Western New York Player of the Year.

Boxes of Joy 2019

Members of the Canisius community packed Boxes of Joy for families in need.
