CHS Robotics to host competition for nearly 30 teams from upstate NY
Keith McShea

CHS Robotics hosts a competition featuring 29 teams on Saturday when it welcomes schools from throughout Western New York and beyond for the Canisius 2025 VEX V5 High Stakes Qualifying Tournament.

About 30 teams from Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Allegany and Madison counties will be competing to earn a spot in the state competition in March.

The Crusaders have been working on their machines all year and were busy tweaking and analyzing them this week in preparation for the strategic contests, in which four robotics take to the arena at the same time, vying to earn the most points via various challenges.

All are welcome to attend the event, which will be held in the unique setting of historic Scaccia Auditorium.

Competition takes place all day long Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The CHS Robotics Club is moderated by teachers Mrs. Emily Friol and Mrs. Karen Nicosia.

Last year, Vincent Misterkiewicz ’24 and Matthew Carver ’26 recorded the highest-ever finish for a Canisius VEX Robotics team when they took second at the Rochester Institute of Technology Over/Under Competition.

Teacher Craig Hinchcliffe reflects on CHS trip to Italy and a historic Easter Sunday

“It was a pretty moving experience. … It was pretty surreal.”

Craig Hinchcliffe and several students spoke Wednesday about the CHS educational trip to Italy over Easter Break, which culminated in the group being part of a historical moment: Pope Francis’ final public appearance as he said “Buona Pasqua” – Happy Easter – and blessed those gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.

Requiescat in Pace, Pope Francis

“He was a Jesuit who knew and loved Jesus deeply,” said CHS President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J. “Francis was a faithful servant of the Gospel who remained close to the people whom Jesus would be close to in our own time. He consistently called us all to greater mercy and compassion.”
