During this past week’s CHS Companions trip to Puerto Rico, one of several service activities included students volunteering at Love4Satos, a non-profit which rescues homeless dogs.
Students cared for dogs while helping with general chores for the organization, which helps the many “satos” – stray dogs – in Puerto Rico. The U.S. territory has a significant animal overpopulation issue as there are an estimated 500,000 stray dogs on the streets of Puerto Rico.
“They were such an incredible group, very hard workers and thoughtful with our rescue pups,” a Love4Satos representative said of the CHS students. “Thanks to all for including our organization in this service trip.”

The Puerto Rico contingent will be returning to Western New York late tonight. Another group returned over the weekend from a trip to New Orleans. More photos from both trips are to come.
In the CHS Companions Program, juniors respond to the Ignatian call to service via immersion trips, with service groups traveling abroad to serve communities in need during school breaks.
The Puerto Rico group included: Aidan Devans, Benjamin Eppolito, Joshua Kandefer, Gianni Latella, Evan Mitskovski, Baron Nieves, Gabriel Olivera, Justin Ostempowski, Angel Rivera and Austin Wozniak with adult leaders Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Charles Frederico, S.J., Assistant to the Principal Fr. Edward Durkin, S.J., and counselor Melissa Langworthy.
Canisius students have also participated in immersion trips to Mexico, Montana, Maine, West Virginia and Virginia over the last two school years. There will be additional trips this spring and summer.
