The Buffalo Urban League presented Damere Hardy '19 with the Outstanding Youth Achievers Scholarship Award for 2018.
Damere was selected for his dedication to school, church, sports, his community, and several co-curricular activities. He has already completed over 100 community service hours so far this school year. Damere was baptized at 10 years old and has remained a dedicated member of the Linwood and Amherst Churches of Christ since his baptism. He exemplifies strong leadership skills, singing in both the youth and adult chorus as a section leader, as well as serving as a youth sports camp leader.
With a career goal of becoming an endodontist, Damere has been participating in the Medical Step program at the University at Buffalo for the past four years. Through this program, he has learned about dentistry, dissecting cadavers, genetic testing, math and medical research. Because of this program and the many presentations and research projects that he has worked on, he was granted the opportunity to work at the UB Pediatric Dental Clinic every summer for the past three years, which is where he found his love for dentistry. Damere has been chosen by Dr. Dian Wells, a local dentist and pediatric dental instructor at UB, to participate in a ten-day sharing/study abroad trip to Trinidad and Tobago through the Medical Step program.
Damere will also travel to Albany for a leadership conference next spring to represent the Medical Step program at the National Youth Albany Conference. Damere has a special love for basketball which he has played since he was a freshman at Canisius.
The award was presented on Saturday, November 10 at a black tie gala at the Buffalo Grand Hotel.
