Think critically. Practice empathy. Don't be lazy. Those are the three main points Kevin Heffernan '04 stressed to a group of Canisius High School students during an Ignatian Scholars assembly in the school auditorium. Mr. Heffernan is the managing director of Rise Collaborative which produces a video and blog series that promotes local small businesses and non profits. Rise Collaborative's No Boundaries series focuses of social and economic justice.
Mr. Heffernan talked with students about his own experiences as a Canisius student and the teachers who challenged him to think critically and not accept everything at face value. He also shared some of what he learned while working in El Salvador. "If you think the poor are poor because they’re lazy and just not trying hard enough, then you are being lazy," Heffernan told the Canisius students, and he challenged them. "Back up and think about why it is happening."
