Boys have some new opportunities to have fun this summer and get a jump start on their futures.
For rising 6th and 7th grade boys, Canisius is hosting a series of one-week "Wonder Week Workshops", each with a separate focus. Boys can sign up for just one week or multiple weeks.
The lineup begins with a Video Game Design and Animation Workshop the week of July 8-12. Boys can learn and use basic computer programming and art skills to design, build, demonstrate and play simple video games. They'll work in Stencyl, and will learn basic gameplay design, computer programming, and use computer applications to create game graphics, interface art, and simple animation.
The second Wonder Week Workshop focuses on robotics during the week of July 15-19. At the Robotics and Science Olympics Workshop boys will delve into concepts of robotics, engineering and programming, building robots using the LEGO Mindstorm platform during the morning. They'll work in two-person teams and experiment with building plans with a goal of competing against each other at the end of the course. Then in the afternoon, they'll learn fundamentals of physics and applications while competing in fun and educational contests that demonstrate their learning and achievement.
There are two workshop choices the week of July 22-26. In the Math in Motion Workshop, boys will learn how knowledge of probability can assist in choices on game shows, investigate how different types of functions can be used to model real-world phenomena, and explore how mathematics has been used in coding throughout the ages. They'll also delve into sports statistics. Using data created in the workshop, as well as data from the internet, they can examine trends and test hypotheses.
The second option the week of July 22-26 is for those who love outdoor adventures. The Outdoor Adventure Workshop includes field trips to Letchworth State Park, Tifft Nature Preserve and the Buffalo River for fun and enriching activities such as hiking, fishing, kayaking and exploring.

For boys who will be starting 8th grade in the fall, the Higher Achievement Program offers preparation for the high school entrance exam along with lots of fun activities. The five-week program also helps boys build friendships that can carry over into the high school years. The program runs July 1-31.
