Canisius High School is adding U.S. Olympian Jim Neil '86 to its coaching staff as Technical Director for the crew team. Coach Neil will work closely with Head Crew Coach Tom Flaherty to identify athletes; develop a technical training program and racing schedule; and compose the team in a way that most effectively and directly puts the student-athletes of Canisius High School in a position to win races.
Jim Neil graduated from Canisius High School in 1986 and competed with the 1992 U.S. Olympic rowing team at the games in Barcelona, and was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic rowing team. He won gold with the Pan American team in 1995 and 1999, and is a 15-time national team member.
“The Canisius High School rowing team has a 70 year tradition of competing at the highest levels and producing top-level athletes. As a student-athlete alumnus of Canisius High School, I am excited and humbled to have the opportunity to help continue that tradition in any way that I am able,” says Neil.
"We are extremely excited to have Jim Neil join our crew program,” adds Canisius Director of Athletics Jim Mauro. “The experience and knowledge he will bring to our program will be a huge asset in continuing to move our program forward and the great tradition it has fostered."
Neil joins a program that has achieved success at the state, national and international levels in the past year. Canisius rowers captured gold at the New York State Scholastic Championships and the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Championship Regatta, and earned bronze at the U.S. Youth National Championships.
