The Canisius High School rowing team's senior lightweight four has established itself as the dominant lightweight scholastic four with coxswain in North America. The crew of Nathaniel Sass '19, Zach Mecca '20, Charlie Korn '19, Zach Porter '19, and coxswain John Weckerle '19 captured the gold over the weekend at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Regatta in St Catharines, Ontario in a sprint to the finish.
The Canadian scholastic nationals victory comes on the heels of the same crew's victory at the US scholastic nationals last week. They will travel to Sarasota, FL on Tuesday to compete in the US Rowing Youth National Championships against the best scholastic and club crews in the country.
The crew of Nathaniel Sass, Zach Mecca, Charlie Korn, Zach Porter, Dylan Sass '21, Max Battaglia '19, Aidan Hart-Nova '20, Nate Siwiec '21, and coxswain Owen Wittmann '20 captured the silver medal in the Senior Lightweight 8+.
Oscar Neil '20 and Reilly Eagan '20 switched disciplines just days before from the Junior 8+, in which they won a New York State Championship, to compete in the Senior Pair, a boat neither had rowed before. They managed to make the final, finishing sixth place over all.
The junior lightweight 8+, consisting of a freshman and sophomore mix, finished fifth in its final.
