The Canisius High School varsity basketball team dominated #1 ranked Park 84-60 on Senior Night to claim first place in the Monsignor Martin League. The first quarter was a tight 18-15 battle, but the Crusaders started dropping threes in the second. Austin James '18 made contested layups and two three-pointers for a total of 19 first half points. Nick MacDonald '18 shot a contested, buzzer-beating shot from barely in front of the half court line to close out the half with a 45-29 lead.
The Crusaders were hot offensively in the start of the third and got to a 23-point lead, but Park came back to within 9 with some excellent offensive play of their own. James made an exceptional buzzer-beating putback from the middle of the key to cap off the quarter. In the fourth, the Crusaders pulled away from Park by sharing the ball and playing superb defense. James ended the game with a juke followed by a punctuating dunk. James and Ryan Bradley '18 led the scoring with 28 and 20 points, respectively. Other impactful performances included MacDonald with 12 points, Jayce Johnson '18 with 10 points, and Brendan Trapper '18 with 10 points.
With the win, Canisius is in sole possession of first place in the Monsignor Martin League by one game with the regular season coming to a close. They travel to take on Aquinas on Friday.
