Affording Canisius
Our goal is to provide the best education in Western New York to a diverse student body with varying economic backgrounds.
If Canisius is the right fit for the student, we work to make the cost of tuition the right fit for the family.
The old saying "you get what you pay for" is especially true in education. What you may not know is that the tuition you see below on this page doesn't even cover how much we actually spend on each student. Thanks to sources such as our endowment and annual fund, we are able to invest additional dollars into providing an excellent education for our students that includes a 12:1 student/teacher ratio, state of the art facilities, and retreat and service programs for all class years unlike any other school in the area.
Approximately 66% of Canisius students receive some form of financial assistance, and 50% of families who apply for financial aid make over $100,000 a year. It is true that we want to make it possible for lower income families to give their sons a Jesuit education at Canisius, while we also aim to help families at various income levels.
For the 2022-23 Academic year:
Tuition: $16,625
Student Activity Fee: $490 for underclassmen; $690 for seniors
Yearbook (optional): $77 (includes sales tax)
Technology Fee: $395
Payment Plan Fee: $18 or $40 (depending on plan chosen)
What is Tuition Assistance?
Tuition assistance at Canisius is not a loan that requires repayment. It is an actual reduction in the cost of tuition. We offer two types of tuition assistance:
- Academic Scholarships
Canisius awards a number of academic scholarships each year. These awards are distributed on a competitive basis by the admissions committee to qualified freshmen applicants who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement. In awarding academic scholarships, members of the committee examine results of the Entrance and Scholarship Examination, student marks from grades 6-8, standardized testing results, student conduct and recommendations. These scholarships are renewable each year based on the recipient maintaining a minimum cumulative average of 90% while enrolled at Canisius.
2. Need-Based Tuition Grants
Sending your son to Canisius involves a commitment to making education a high priority. For most families, this entails making some sacrifices. We are aware the expense of a superior Jesuit education can place a significant burden on any family’s budget. Accordingly, Canisius offers financial assistance to families demonstrating need.
The generosity of our benefactors enables the school to offer tuition grants, intended to make a Canisius education more accessible to talented, hard-working students who qualify for financial assistance. Each family shares in this responsibility and contributes as well. The amount of tuition assistance awarded will depend upon the degree of financial need, as determined by family income, assets and liabilities, number of siblings, and other factors. Canisius is, unfortunately, unable to provide 100% assistance.
Members of the tuition assistance committee are particularly interested, however, in learning about any compelling circumstances surrounding the application for assistance, and whether these circumstances impact the ability of the family to send its son to Canisius. All information presented to the tuition assistance committee is held in strict confidence.

Applying for Tuition Assistance

Canisius uses a third-party administrator called TADS (Tuition Aid Data Services) for its tuition assistance application process. TADS has an outstanding reputation for helping families throughout the application process.
Tuition assistance is available on the basis of demonstrated need. Families are encouraged to apply if it is believed their resources are not sufficient to meet the total cost of a Canisius education. Tuition assistance award recommendations are calculated by a TADS formula and reported to the members of the tuition assistance committee for review before a final determination is made.

Tuition Assistance Process
- For families applying to Canisius as freshmen, the TADS application period is November 2 through December 15.

Returning families must complete a TADS application by April 15 to be considered for tuition assistance.
