Center for Excellence

The Center for Excellence at Canisius High School upholds the school's philosophy and goals for academic excellence. It is devoted to providing a rich learning environment equipped with essential resources and personnel to serve the information needs of the Canisius learning community.

The Florence Hanrahan Carr Memorial Learning Commons is home to over 6000 catalogued titles including encyclopedias, atlases, current fiction, audio books, e-Books, graphic novels, the classics, critical guides to literature, biographies, current periodicals and popular magazines, including subscriptions to daily newspapers, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The learning community also has access to the Internet, e-mail, e-Books and electronic databases that are available to them through the Schoology portal both on campus and remotely (with the provided passwords). The Center’s Schoology portal also has links to a variety of resources that support the curriculum. 

To facilitate their schoolwork, students may use a printer and a photocopy machine in the Center. There are 14 computers in the main room that are available for students to use before and after school. The Center for Excellence staff is available to help students Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm, with staff or teachers to supervise the room from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm during regular school days. The Center for Excellence is for quiet study or collaboration and students are expected to comport themselves appropriately in the library.

Hours

Regular library hours are 7:30 am to 5:00 pm on normal school days. The library space serves the community in various ways so occasionally the library may be closed to students.

Circulation

General collection books circulate for 2 weeks. At the due date, a book can be renewed for an additional 2 weeks, if no one else has requested it. 

Reference material does not circulate. If you need to borrow a book overnight, please check with the Center's staff.  Other books/materials on reserve may not be taken out of the library.
