The Canisius High School varsity football team successfully defended its Monsignor Martin Athletic Association title with a 22-14 victory over St. Joe's on November 18, 2017.
The Crusaders forced turnovers and stopped a drive by the Marauders as time expired at New Era Field to capture the championship in back-to-back years, and for a fifth time in the last six years. Canisius has now beaten St. Joe's a school-record ninth time in a row.
The victory also meant the Crusaders would have the opportunity to defend their state title as well. Canisius though fell short of that goal on November 25, 2017 in the state Catholic championship game. Canisius lost the title in a 49-28 defeat by Archbishop Stepinac at the Robert J. Stransky Memorial Complex in West Seneca.
