Canisius High School is adding three new varsity sports to its athletics program. Rugby, sailing and squash will move from club status to varsity status this school year, bringing the total number of varsity sports offered at Canisius to 19.

"All three programs have shown sustainability and growth over the past number of years at Canisius," says Jim Mauro, director of athletics at Canisius. "We anticipate the trend will continue and the elevation to varsity status will promote it even further. We are proud that the programs have already offered collegiate opportunities for some of our athletes, but more importantly, these three sports have enhanced the overall student-athlete experience."

Jack Wiles '17 earned an athletic scholarship to play rugby for St. Bonaventure University, and Matt Dukarm '17 accepted a scholarship to play squash at Franklin Pierce University.

The three new varsity programs will compete against local programs and also travel to some tournaments and regional events.
