Fr. John G. Sturm, S.J. '35 Legacy Fund
"Life is a dance. Dance the Dance. Do not sit on the sidelines. Life is not a dress rehearsal."
Fr. John G. Sturm, S.J. ’35 was a standout athlete in his days as a Canisius High School student. After his ordination, he served as Prefect of Discipline at the school for 19 years. His love of sports and care for others lives on through the Fr. John G. Sturm, S.J. '35 Legacy Fund.
The Fr. John G. Sturm, S.J. '35 Legacy Fund was created to build the endowment of the Fr. Sturm Scholarship, provide tuition assistance for NativityMiguel Middle School students who enroll at Canisius High School, and to support the President's Athletic Fund which helps cover capital athletic purchases.
2017 STURM LUNCHEON PHOTO GALLERYLongtime Canisius High School baseball coach Bryan Tenney '76 was the honoree at this year's Fr. John G. Sturm, S.J. '35 Legacy Fund Luncheon on September 26, 2017. Nearly 200 people gathered in the Lexus Club at the KeyBank Center in downtown Buffalo to honor Coach Tenney, and support the Fr. Sturm Legacy Fund.
Bryan Tenney began his coaching career at Canisius with the freshman baseball team in 1989, and in 1991 became the third varsity baseball coach in the school's history. Tenney's teams have been successful, winning 12 Georgetown Cups under his direction and a 13th under the direction of long-time assistant Paul Smaldone while Tenney took a year off. He instills in his teams a "work as hard as you can" approach. Many of Tenney's former players have found success beyond Canisius including Padres pitching prospect Dan Dallas '16, and Midland Rockhounds (Double-A affiliate of the Oakland A's) Manager Fran Riordan '93.
The Fr. Sturm Legacy Fund was established 2 1/2 years ago to help young men who need financial assistance to attend Canisius, and provide tuition relief for NativityMiguel Middle School alumni who enroll at Canisius. The Fr. Sturm Legacy Fund also helps cover athletic department expenses that go beyond the school budget allocation. In the last year, the Fr. Sturm Legacy Fund helped purchase football helmets, lacrosse uniforms, pool cleaning equipment and HVAC for the weight room.
