Learning Lab is a Title 1 funded after-school program, the objective of which is to aid students in their academic performance in verbal and written communication skills, critical analysis skills and reading comprehension, as well as quantitative reasoning skills. Title 1 refers to the amended title 1, part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. As a result of this legislation, local educational institutions that meet certain criteria are issued grant money that can be used to “provide all children [with] a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education…” Through this grant, we are able to provide supplemental instruction in the areas of English, math and general study skills. Learning Lab is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from the end of classes until 3:30. Morning appointments are available for supplemental instruction in English, math and study skills development.
Students who are in need of greater assistance with the content taught in their English and math classes will be required to attend Learning Lab. The Learning Lab is a separate program that is offered in addition to consultation. Consultation is a daily part of the school day, beginning at the end of regular classes and ending at 3:00. During consultation, teachers are available in their respective rooms to answer questions and provide extra help. When an issue arises or a student needs support in a certain class, consultation is a student’s first line of defense. When a student attends consultation regularly, but still struggles with the content, then the student can be required to attend Learning Lab. A student who is scheduled to attend Learning Lab, but needs to attend consultation should attend consultation until 3:00 and then get a pass to attend Learning Lab from 3-3:30.
Regular attendance is crucial; when a student attends after-school help consistently, his academic performance improves. Mrs. Beckwith and the guidance counselors consider each recommended student on a case-by-case basis and will work with the student and his parents to create a schedule that will best fit the student’s needs. Mrs. Beckwith will document attendance and communicate with parents and counselors when a student is not present in Learning Lab on his scheduled day.
